Generally, it is said that Nishi's ethical theory is based on European utilitarianism, i.e., Nishi's "Sampou" ["three treasures"-health, wisdom and wealth] are regarded as "the greatest good or greatest happiness" in Bentham's principle. However it is possible to think that he attempted to establish "the new Confucian ethical theory" [the theory of Confucian democracy] by reforming Confucianism or criticizing Neo-Confucianism. I think that his theory had the possibility of becoming one of the fundamental principles of modern civil society in Japan. In this paper, by analyzing Nishi's descriptions and the Confucian concepts that he used, I want to clarify his ethical thoughts and his design for modern society.}, pages = {1--17}, title = {西周『人世三宝説』について}, volume = {32}, year = {2000}, yomi = {ゴトウ, アイジ} }
