Pierre Louys, the author of the text, was very much close to the composer. Debussy composed "La chevelure" in 1897 in advance of two other songs. This article will try to explain why "La chevelure" is composed in the manner of the later romanticism. First we analyze the tendency of the song to the chromatic harmonization and then discuss on the Debussy's idea of 'haer (chevelure)' referring to "Pelleas et Melisande."
