Compulsory education is for elementary and junior high school, altogether for nine years. Since China is a multiracial nation where 56 races are living together, there are two types of schools for each educational step : ordinary schools for educating the Chinese Han people and the racial schools for educating the minorities. According to the statistics in 1993,there were 25,037 elementary and 2.889 juniro high schools of the racial school type, and 696,681 elementary and 68,415 junior high schools of the ordinary school type. I am interested in Chinese education for the minorities from the viewpoint of bilingual education. I would like to clarify how the administration is giving guidance to the racial schools.
