Brown (1882-1973) of the American Y. M. C. A. was invited by the Japanese Y. M. C. A. in 1912 to become its sports director. It was the time when the modern sport was just being introduced to Japan. For seventeen years after assuming his position, he continued to make contributions to and make innovations in the Japanese sports world. His achievement was especially remarkable in popularizing basketball and volleyball in Japan and training players. He also played and important role in training the Japanese team for the Far Eastern Games and the Olymopic Games. In 1930,he was finally decoreted for all the contributions and achievements he had made. In spite of all his achievments, the details of his initial visit to Japan and his work are not very well known.
