For this purpose, the intensity of exercise was measured by the change in the rate of heartbeat, which is an indicator of physiological burden. The amount of exercise was measured by the number of steps recorded on a pedometer. Eight mentally retarded children with no physical handicap between the ages of 8 and 12 were the subjects of this study. The results were as follows : 1. Obstacle race proved to be a highly effective teaching material providing reasonable intensity and amount of exercise. 2. Circuit training provided high intensity with a low amount of exercise. It can be considered an effective teaching material in developing child's physical strength. 3. In rhythmic play, children with lower IQ tended to show higher intensity and a larger amount. It can be regarded as a good teaching material to induce motivation in children of mid-and heavy-level mental retardation. 4. Musical chairs proved to be an effective teaching material to obtain high levels of intensity among those children with low IQ and slow movement. 5.
