According to an analysis of detached houses built by local, rural builders in the period 1989-2000,the following features could be found : 1) Traditional wooden construction is decreasing all over the country, however, most of the detached houses built by local, rural builders hold on to this type of construction. 2) The outstanding exterior feature of detached houses in rural areas is roofing materials. About 70% of these houses use traditional Japanese clay roofing tiles. 3) Houses in rural areas have more tatami-rooms and connected tatami-rooms than those found in the cities.
